Topband: Tribander traps

Herb,

It is not an easy job as the interior insulators may be brittle and
break. I did the clean out exercise to several tri-banders, A Hy-Gain
Explorer 14 and a Cushcraft A3S. I found bugs, even a lizard in one
trap. I clean the connection to the element from the trap and replaced
the set screw with a stainless steel one after putting Penetrox to the
aluminum strap. One thing I do not like about triband beams is the
inability to cover the entire band with a VSWR below 1.5 so I finally
made the decision to replace the triband(s) with a three element Cubex
Quad and it was worth the effort both in total band coverage and over
all performance. As a result I have a large box of tri-bander traps in
the corner for both antennas which I was going to put on eBay. Some of
them do not have the protective end caps which were discarded because
they were also brittle from years of baking in the tropical sun. Let me
know if you need any of these traps.

Good luck with your project
