Thanks for some great work, Dan. Like Rudy's, a lot to digest, and much

I'm sad to hear that! I worked Mike on 160 MANY years ago for my first VK6
on 160 and one of my proudest 160m accomplishments at that time!
I've worked Mike on several other bands, but the 160 contact was special and
one I will always remember!

Thanks,. Mike!  Rest in Peace!

Hi Bruce,

Gosh, but that is VERY sad news indeed...

Mike's signal was doubtlessly the very first "VK6" Topband log entries with MORE than a few stations on this side. I will miss his presence on the band, as will many others, I am sure.

Many top-banders and I will miss Mike. He always had a good signal. I was proud

Mike as my first VK on 160.

Count me in as another admirer of Mike,  who gave Zone 29 to so many of us,
not only on Top Band, but other bands as  well.

Mike was also a top notch 160 Meter DXer, living a long way from  major
population centers, but still able to run up a high country  total.
Contacts on 160 into places like PY may be  routine for those of us in the USA and
Europe, but it was a major accomplishment  from VK6, and may have required
years of effort.

In July 1986 I was part of a group to  activate Market Reef as OH0MD/OJ0.
In the USA we  think of July as a high QRN month, but on Market Reef,
you really have no  darkness, and perhaps only 1 hour per day of TWILIGHT.
Be that as it may, it was a real pleasure to give Mike a new one on that
operation, and a collective cheer went up in the lighthouse when Mike was
logged  on 160.    Everyone knew who Mike was, and had a favorite story  about
first Topband VK, or first Zone 29 on a particular  band.  To give
something back to Mike was very special.  It was a  tribute to his craftiness and
dedication to break through a wall of European  callers.

I can remember working Mike a very long  time ago as G3HDA and for decades
as VK6HD.     Sadly, you  just don't replace guys like Mike.

RIP, Old Friend.

I was also very sorry to hear this news. Like many others here, Mike was my first VK on 160, and was a fine demonstration of why it's called the "Gentleman's Band."

RIP Mike

Hello,

it is the most sad information for me. Mike was an excellent operator
and real gentleman.
Mike was my first VK/Oceanian on TB when I was young novice on band and
he was always
ready to help. We exchanged a lot of letters regarding the TB antennas
and operation tactics.

Mike will be missed not by myself but in all TB family!
Mike, RIP and pass our 73 to Stew, W1BB

I don't know if it comports with Australian regulations and/or traditions,
but I sent the following message to the Australian Communications and Media
Authority:

Mike Bazley of Albany, WA recently became what we in amateur radio circles
call a "silent key." Mike represented Western Australia to amateurs
worldwide in the best spirit of the service, with unfailing courtesy,
patience and dedication. The "Topband" email reflector is ringing with
testimonials to the appreciation so many of us feel for Mike's unswerving
commitment to providing contacts with the elusive "zone 29" on the 1.8 MHz
and 3.5 MHz bands. To honor Mike's devotion to our hobby, I request on
behalf of amateur radio operators around the world that Mike's call sign,
VK6HD, be retired from reassignment.

Respectfully,

Brian Machesney, K1LI

See you!

Very sad to hear of Mike's passing.

Flipping back through my old logs, handwritten on something called
paper, it appears our first QSO with Mike was on 40 meter CW in January
of 1980. But it is the second QSO I recall most, on 80 CW on the last
day of that month. We had had several exchanges when Mike reported my
signal had suddenly dropped several S units but he still had solid copy.
Looking up, I realized my manual antenna switch had been left with my
new "Beverage" receiving antenna connected to the transmitter, and Mike
was still hearing me with my 25 watts going into a wire only a few feet
off the ground. We both had a laugh when I told him what happened and,
back on my real transmit antenna, we carried on at full strength for a
few minutes more.

It was those golden ears of Mike's that gave us so many hundreds of
contacts on Topband -- the first in January of 1981 and the last 32
years later. He was there keeping the vigil, frequently the only DX
coming through. He'd drop in for a quick hello, just to let us know the
band was open -- halfway around the world -- when there was no other
sign it was open to anywhere. We'd swap notes on the weather, band
conditions and pass along tips on DX the other might need. Often he'd
stop back a half hour later with a new signal report. In the years
before packet and the Internet, and even after, he'd drop in quickly to
let me know one I needed in his part of the world was just a few kHz up
or down the band, and I'd do likewise.

We will miss our dear friend. Mike helped keep this band alive for so many.

73 and GL DX,

Jon AA1K
