Topband: Nostalgic "openings"

Hi, Jim

The first "sideband" rig I ever had -back in the 1950s was a T-19 (3-4 Mc) ARC-5 in which I converted the 1625 finals to a high-level balanced modulator by connecting the balanced grid tank to apply RF in push-pull to the control grids and applied push-pull audio transformer coupled to the screen grids and left the plates in parallel. Had lots of fun with it on 75m "SSB". The VFO's in those aircraft radios was plenty stable for sideband and the design and construction was so carefully balanced that achieving good carrier suppression was no problem! And most of the guys listening to me had SSB selectivity in their receivers so the opposite sideband wasn't a problem. I'd just zero-beat their carrier frequency and call in! :-) In the "old days" - not long after WW II. There were lots of ARC-5s around and I still have a few‼
