I think I give up on this project. 

Firstly, I can think of no way to reliably retrieve the wire in the spring, no matter what gauge it is and as has been pointed out that could be hazardous to wildlife.
Secondly, it would seem unlikely that it will work very well, and as I have plenty of space for real Beverages I will concentrate on those.
