The "perfect" method (IMHO) is the "aluminum clothesline tensioner"
such as shown on Amazon at this URL:

Fits 3/16 inch rope.

For larger rope, I use fence T-posts as anchors and wrap the
rope around the post a few times and then tie a hitch knot.
