Topband: Non-Invasive tree attachment?

Can't you just wrap a few turns of 1/4" diameter nylon rope around the
branch? That's what I do with my oak trees here, and it never hurt the bark.
If willow bark is not as tough as oak, then perhaps some burlap between the
bark and rope would protect the tree.
