I agree with you Ken.  The K6TU site is the way to go for generating the terrain files. 
 
All you do is enter the coordinates for the tower and name the files.  A couple of minutes later, you get an email with a link to your new files.    
 
The files are generated using the National Elevation Dataset.   You don't have to worry about being near the edge of a USGS quadrangle, thus no merging of DEM files.  
 
All the USGS quad DEMS in my area are 30 meter resolution.  The NED files are 10 meter resolution.  The USGS Quad files have the elevation at my hilltop 20' too low.   The NED files generated automatically from the K6TU site show my accurate elevation.    I have found the same issue exists with the USGS Quad 30M files  on profiles I have done for some other friends here in WV. 
 
The K6TU site automates the most difficult part of using HFTA.  It is a great tool, and it is free!
