Hi Lee,

It doesn't have to end this way...

The U.S. Navy AN/FPS-12 Over the Horizon Radar (one of a series
of 1960s and 1970s CHECKROTE HF radars ) in White House,
Virginia was dismantled in 1987 to make way for the Navy's new
AN/TPS-71 OTH radar. A commercial tower company owned
by a PVRC member dismantled hundreds of Folded Triangular
Monopole (FTM) antennas and thousands of feet of reflecting screens.
Fortunately for me and dozens of other hams their contract included
removal of all antenna related components and full salvage rights.

Just a tiny fraction of the components from the FTM arrays and
reflecting screens and some additional antennas on the site found their
way into dozens of ham stations, For example, five hundred feet of
AB-105 tower, six large 14-30 MHz log periodic arrays, miles and
miles of RG-17, RG-8 and 1/2 inch hardline coax, dozens of 7 inch
diameter 40 foot monopoles and hundreds of vacuum relays found
their way to W3LPL. At least one of K3LR's towers and several of
N4AF's towers came from the dismantled AN/FPS-112 facility.

These two sites are also gone now. Hauled away for scrap. Acres of stainless mesh wire ground plane as well.
