Pete,

There are lots of references for driving ground rods -- e.g. starting a hole with a shovel and filling with water (as lubricant). For best performance, numerous users have found that 4 radials extending beyond the footprint of the loop keep things stable as weather changes. Put them directly under the loop wires. 

FYI, all of my personal loops have worked fine with just a 4-foot ground rod. The only special thing is that I bury the feedline and control wires to minimize common-mode.

The loop is finished, but I'm having a devil of a time getting a ground 
rod in at the base.? It's been over a month since the last rain here, 
and the soil is really hard.? Seems like I read someplace that you could 
substitute a couple of 50-foot on the ground radials for a ground rod if 
necessary.? True?

PS even without the ground, or the feedline chokes, directivity seems 
pretty good on high AM BC stations.

Any advice much appreciated
