I have quite a lot invested in my station, but it doesn’t mean I can spend ALL my time doing radio. I still work and have a farm to run, and eat and sleep!
I’m not much inclined to get up before sunrise, while the mornings are still quite cold. I was looking for 7P8R on 160 m, but they didn’t come on until 2050 today, which is an hour and a half after my sunrise.
When the mornings are less chilly, as we get closer to summer, I will be spending more time looking for EU openings
I’m certainly coming on more than “a few times a year”. However, I tend to avoid TB Contests, as I find these events just about kill any opportunity for me to work DX. I like to work new countries from time to time as the possibility arises, but am happy to work “old friends”. I also never call “CQ *DX*” only “CQ” as I’m happy for a rag chew with old friends locally too. They are considerate enough to wait until my CQs are not catching any DX.
As we head into summer, the evenings are getting very noisy. The mornings are usually not too bad, so soon I’ll be on then, rather than the evenings.

As you say Steve, there are all kinds of 160m operators.
I guess I just find it strange that some people go to a an awful lot of
effort to be able to work DX on Top Band . . . big antennas, often with
phasing arrangements . . . a big Linear, sometimes modified to cover 160m .
. . and all kinds of exotic Receiving antennas . . .
And yet many of those people only come on a few times a year, ie only if
there's some new island on the air, or possibly when there's a Contest.
It just seems an awful waste to me !
Anyway . . . there are several of us Europeans on Top Band calling CQ 3 or 4
nights a week . . . and happy to work ANY DX station, no matter how many
times we may have worked before !
