Topband: VK9NT worked on TB!

..woke up about 30 mins before my SR and heard nothing on 160m. No
sigs. . Then saw a spot for VK9NT and went to the spotted freq. All of
a sudden a signal rose up out of the noise. Q5. Gave my call
once....and Luke came right back. Solid copy both ways. for my
#180/160 on TB.

Also spotted was the TX5 on FT8 but strictly ssb/cw/rtty here.
Apparently they dont do CW. on 160m.

BUT a "new one" on 160m in April is always a good thing!

Tnx to the tips I received about Luke being active which enabled me to
work them on the third sunrise. The first two SR's I didnt hear a
thing. But kept at it.

An interesting thing is I never got my radials rolled out for this
past winter. So Im operating the 1/4 wave INV-L (52' vertical leg)
without any radials. Just against a single ground rod. :) Of course,
the ACOM 1000 amp with 600w out helps. Must be the good "average"
ground offered by Midwestern soil!

Tnx Jon. THAT will encourage me to get up early.

I worked him on 10m a few days back. so he looks pretty active. and I
 need Norfolk on TB.

Plus I worked an HZ in the evening on 20 LP. So some good things are
happening to tempt us away from 160.

As we've said before, many of us in NA are fighting not just QRN but
significant attacks from lightning.? There a lot of us that are
essentially shut down for the season, my self included? (four square
elements are now grounded and the 8 circle is decommissioned).? I'm
still QRV somewhat with a 1/4 wave sloping vertical with elevated
radials but deaf as a post much of the time.

Out here on the west coast, the only time I hear CW on 160 (other
 than
VE6WZ) is during contests. This time of year, my opportunity for DX
 is
to VK/ZL in the morning, but deep into retirement, I don't do
 mornings. :)

The situation here at W5ZN is the same as Dave's. Way too much
 lightning
from now until September to keep all of the 160 meter antennas out
 and
 operational.

I get why many of you in North America may not be active at the
 moment, if
there's now a lot of QRN (let alone risk of lightning strikes) . . .

But are the poor RBN reports lately due to high QRN over there,
 rather than
poor Propagation, do you think? (given that RBN shows signal strength
 above
the Noise, rather than absolute signal strength)

 Hi Roger,

I monitor solar weather regularly and over the past 6 weeks there
 have
been lots of C and M class Solar flares with an X class flare thrown
 in.
Between all the flares, CME's and Radio storms there have been very
 few
days when the K index has been below 2 even briefly, which, in
 Western
CT is the propagation equivalent of throwing a wet blanket on a fire.
Then add in the QRN from Thunder static and rain static plus at least
FIVE Nor-easters in the past 6 weeks and you have all but eliminated
most of the good band openings. I realize that the weather related
storms don't affect propagation but all the qrn that they generate
 keeps
some ops from wanting to turn on the radio to operate 160.

Perhaps the biggest cause of the reduced signal strength comes from
 the
much higher Solar Flux and SSN numbers that we have been experiencing
 as
cycle 25 ramps up. The higher levels of ionization, daytime
 absorption
and increased MUF are all negatively impacting 160 M openings around
 the
world. This will not improve significantly until the solar numbers
 are
in decline again to low levels, hopefully not for another 5 - 6
 years.

Yes, Rotten QRN. Yes, Rotten Lightning bursts. Yes, Solar conditions.
But many of us are lured away from 160 to 15, 10 and 6. Some of our
 ears
are somewhere else other than 160 when the SF goes up.
I love the band, but sometimes it's hard to resist the stronger DX,
 and
 smaller gain antennae. :-)
