Glad you have at lest identified the source of this problem . . .
Back in the 70s suddenly a spurious signal appeared on 1880kHz.
You could clearly hear that it was two stations from a local BBC AM
Transmitter mixing together. This was very annoying, as it was one of the
main SSB frequencies.
Fortunately, one of the locals was an Engineer with the GPO Radio Services
dept (our Regulator back then), so he got the BBC to sort it out quite
swiftly. As I recall, it turned out it was rusty metal guy wires that were
causing the mixing and re-radiating.
