I am sad to report that my father, Bob Kavanagh, VE3OSZ, passed away on June 3rd after a short stay in hospital. He was first licensed in the early 50’s as VE1YW in Fredericton and later became VE3AQO in Toronto for a few years. Back in Fredericton, he revived his interest in ham radio in the 1970s and obtained the call VE1AXT. After moving to Ottawa in the 1980s he became VE3OSZ.

He was a longtime CW DXer, with a special interest in 160 metres, and achieved 5BDXCC and 160m DXCC on CW with no more than 100 watts and simple antennas. He started contesting in the 1970s and he and I enjoyed quite a few multi-operator efforts together.
Away from the key, he was involved with the Ottawa Valley Mobile Radio Club and the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club for several years, ran a licensing course and was an Accredited Examiner. He also served in an advisory capacity for The Canadian Amateur regarding technical article submissions and wrote some articles himself.

Professionally he taught Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto and The University of New Brunswick and later worked for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council in Ottawa. His wife Millicent predeceased him, and he is survived by daughter Judy, son Steve (VE3SMA) and partner Rhoda.
