Topband: Topband Power Line Noise issue

Been having some loud power line noise ( again) . A few years ago a
friend and I used a portable AM radio to locate a lightning arrestor
that was continuously arcing to ground and creating quite a racket.
The engineer could hear the arcing from the street as we got closer to
the pole and had it fixed an hour later.

A month ago I noticed the same sounding power line noise (S3)coming
from the SW ( on 10 and 5m yagis.) and drove around the block til I
found it.

Then a few days ago a new source of RFI began buzzing at 59+10. A few
months ago my old 2M HT died, so I needed a new one. Bought the Alinco
for under $100, because it has an AM VHF band for aircraft traffic. So
this was my first chance to test it.

I had barely driven down the street when the noise appeared, peaked
right at my intersection with an adjoining road, then faded as I drove
down that road in both directions.

Being a Saturday, I sent an email to the utility summarizing the RFI
problem, identifying the location of both sources (of their energy
loss), and volunteering my services to work with their engineers when
they come out.

Last time they came out within a week or so. TBC

I have a 402CD ready to go once I get another tower up. We'll see how
 that works :-)

 73, Mike W4EF.............

 ## At the VE7ZZZ MM station, back in the 80's, they had a 402CD up
65'.
I got to use it one night..summertime, while passing through their
neck of
the woods That was the most fun I have had to date. They were on 19
acres, on a hill, overlooking a lake. They had to generate their own
AC
power. Nearest, and only neighbour was 3/4 mile away. You can hear a
 pin drop.

 ## I had this huge JA pileup going instantly which lasted a couple of
hrs,
till a VK called me. I rotated from 300degs..down to 257 degs, and he
just about fell on the floor. Aprx 1300w pep out on SSB at the time.

 ## previous to that, they had tried wire ants up 90' in the pine
trees...... and also phased verticals, you name it, they had tried
it. The
2 el, shorty 40 cleaned house.

 ## Lemme know how it works out for you.
