Hello Chris,
The Uni-Hat CTSVR (160, 80, 40 & 17m vertical) uses a 3 section heavy
duty galvanized steel telescoping mast as the center support structure
for the antenna. There is a 1.25" OD by 36" long solid aluminum extender
rod added above the mast to achieve a 30' overall vertical height. The
extender rod supports a 17' diameter top-hat assembly with 8 radial
arms. The inside radial arms use (.058 wall) .75" aluminum tubing with
36" internal stiffners to strengthen the radial arm attach point at the
solid rod assembly. The outer length of the radial arm is a 7' length of
(.058 wall) .0625" aluminun tubing. The outer perimeter of the arms are
tied together with copper clad steel wire for added structural rigidity
and capacitance in the top-hat structure.
The CTSVR has survived 2" ice loads in 80 mph wind gusts sustained over
a 72 hour period above the artic circle. It survived a hurricane in the
Carribean with over 125 mph recorded wind velocities at the antenna
site. The steel mast is definitely the way to go for your vertical
antenna construction. 73's Ed - N5NUG
