True North

 A survival technique for finding north used to be taught using a
wrist watch. I don't remember the exact method, but it involved
orienting the hour hand and the minute hand toward the sun and north
was in a different direction (duh).

As I said, I can't remember the method exactly, but since I've been
wearing a digital watch for about 20 years now (and judging by the
beeps that go off on or near the hour at any ham gathering, so do
most of you) the point is moot.
