I was Commanding Officer at USCG LORAN Station Caribou, Me for 4 years.
The
LORAN antenna was a skeleton cone suspended between four 700ft towers in
a square 1400 ft on a side. The Caribou area has some pretty awesome
thunderstorms
during the summer and I can remember standing out in front of the
station watching
lightning strike the towers. All of the insulators arcing over made it
sound like a
shootoing gallery!
