as a side light....

 the number of ground rods is not the "NUT" of the matter..

it is the earth resistance of your earthing electrode system.

or another way of looking at it is,  the resistance between your
earth electrode system and earth...

the soil resisitivity is the important issue..
a low resistance earth requires only a single ground rod for
 significant protection.

But if you were on top of a solid rock mountain, a freight car full of
ground rods would be of no use...

Sandy dry soil usually has a high resistance
Moist loam  will have a lower resistance..
