Hi Charlie,
I was very shocked to find rust in my Rohn thrust bearing. It is a 1975
model, and when I took my tower down to move QTH's I found it took a wrench
to turn the bearing. The ball bearings were covered in rust. I sprayed
several kinds of cleaner in the bearing, finally I coated the bearings with
a red type grease. From now on when I tilt the tower to work on the beams,
I spray a very good quality lube in the bearing, People told me they didn't
need lube..ha ha ha , don't believe them. Mine wouldn't hardly turn before
I cleaned and lubed the ball bearings. Most people on these reflectors have
never seen a thrust bearing, they just read and quote the specs.
