Mike, sounds to me like you need a new shaft. I know that may sound
life threatening but if you want to fix it right you're either gonna
have to get the shaft built up and turned back down to probably
0.500", or replace the shaft with a new one. If you are trying to
retain oil in the gearbox the new seal will not help you if the shaft
is badly worn If it's grease you are sealing in, it's not going to
leak anyway unless you over fill it or it gets hot. If you are trying
to seal out dirt, grit, ect. it'll have to fit right. If you're not
afraid of weakening the shaft further, you may want to try polishing
it down with a file to begin with then slicking it up with emory
cloth. You're not far from a 7/16th inch shaft now. Call around to
suppliers of bearings and ect. and ask for a lip seal 1-1/4 O.D by
7/16 I.D. by 3/8 thick. Now that bearings have come to mind,
there is a good possibility you may have a bad one. Somethink may
have allowed some run-out in that shaft and the first sign is a worn
shaft and seal. I'm sorry.
