[TowerTalk] The Zepp, The Ladder Line, The Experience

Being the little pop-gun that I am here in Kansas....

I have used the Zepp antenna as described in CQ Magazine for several years.
Almost everyone agrees here on the reflector that it is a fine antenna.  It
is true, the thing radiates very well on all bands.

My "faith" in the Zepp antenna was strengthened (now you know what other
lists I am on) in the last two Field Day Operations.  A similar antenna was
installed and placed more that 100 feet away from the CW station at a height
of 30 foot.  Now, during the summer, we worked (FD - 100 watts) Alaska and
Hawaii on 40 and 80 meters with the antenna in the wee hours of the event.

It is a remarkable antenna for a the low bands.  I would like someone to
comment on the use of open line feeder (especially the loss factor).  I
understand the standard 450 ohm ladder line which is prevalent now is not as
good as the homebrew 6" spreader ladder or window line.  Any comments as to
the quality of ladder line?

Also, has anyone use a 4:1 remote balun with one of these?  I have with good
results.
