I believe the article you are thinking of is in the May 1979 issue
of Ham Radio magazine and is entitled "Quads vs Yagis Revisited."  The author
is N6NB.  He evaluates lots of different Yagis and Quads using a TH-2 
on a portable tower as a reference antenna.
