When I rented a house in NC I put up a 35 foot 25G with a 6 foot
concrete base (rocks in the bottom 6 inches).  Since it wasn't a long
term situation, the concrete was poured to 6 inches below ground
level.

Got an awful lot of stares while digging the base, a few more when the
cement truck came, even more when I took the thing down and covered up
the base with dirt.  

Landlord was more upset that I used nails to hang pictures on the
wall.

Pity the gardener who finds the base with a rototiller!
