a coupla years ago W1CW made an awesome looking vertical out of a cage of
wires which were around rings of PVC pipe.....he took a length of PVC pipe
and cut it on the saw into a ton of short pieces....mebbe 1/2" or so long
"pipes" - then attached the wires to one of these spacing them every coupla
feet.......it looks awesome....as to whether it really adds
bandwidth...dunno...but gawd it looks really hammy! 73, Jim, K4OJ

The antenna is called the G4ZU Bird Cage. The original article was in
the April 1960 CQ magazine. The antenna was made commercially along
with his popular G4ZU 20, 15, 10 minibeam.
The antenna is two full size loops bent back toward mast in a v shape.
at the top and bottom..the loop is in 4 arms and two sides on each
element. G4ZU used a driven element and a reflactor as they are very
closed space. The gain is closer to a 2 el quad (about 6Dbd) but if
one had a tall rotating tower you could put up a great 80 or 160 beam.
I have the G4ZU commercial birdcage and we used it for a number of
years on Field day with great results. I am using part of the
antenna for a W9PNE X-beam on 12
I would be glad to send you a copy iof the CQ article f you will
provide an address
