Dick: Right you are about the AEA CIA-HF Complex Impedance Analyzer, it uses a DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) that is not only STABLE, but the absolute accuracy is very good as well. The BIGGEST advantage is the fact that it not only gives a single frequency, it also has a sweep generator that allows a graphical display so that you can see a curve of all the parameters relative to frequency. Seeing the trend of these various parameters is extremely useful information when you are trying to tune or troubleshoot tuned circuits or antennas.

To achieve the same capabilities as the CIA-HF (which is a true vector impedance analyzer) you will have to spend over ten times as much and it will not be portable enough to take up a tower with you.

The CIA-HF is a little more expensive than the non-graphical competitors, but then it comes in a high quality Fluke-style instrument case that you will probably want to keep in your tool box for the rest of your life. Remember, quality SAVES money over time!

Jim,

I wonder if you'd be able to answer a question for me. I'm considering the
MFJ 259B and the new AEA analyzer (the one that does complex impedance.) I
have used both the original MFJ 259 and the Autek RF-1, and my biggest
complaint about both of them is the frequency tuning. When searching for
resonance, I have a lot of trouble pinning the frequency down any closer
than, say, 25 KHz, sometimes more. I think this is mostly due to the fact
that the tuning is so coarse. The RF-1 has a fine tune dial, but it's not
particularly fine and I still have had problems reproducing results from one
measurement to the next. The AEA supposedly has a much better oscillator,
and you can simpy key in any desired frequency. The advertising for the 259B
says it has a reduction drive for tuning. How well does it work?

Thanks & 73, Dick, WC1M
