Tom, you probably ran into a nest of ground hornets. They match the
description, and are bad news.

Usually, you have to know the location---it will be justa small hole in
the ground-wait until night- take about a quart of gasoline and pour it
down the hole and light it off.

With that many stings, you're lucky you didn't have a severe reaction.
