Hmmm, one might read Moxon's treatise on HF Antennas For All Locations... 
In one chapter he describes measuring the losses of 150 yards of bits and
pieces of open wire line fed and terminated by a pair of 9:1 homebrew baluns
and finding the total loss of about 0.4 dB (loss is from memory, so double
check me on it...)  The point is that open wire line is not as touchy as
advertised...
