I ran across an article in the 4/1924 issue of Wireless Days.

It described the placebo antenna design. The antenna worked all bands
available at the time from 500KHz down to 14Mhz. The estimated
efficiency of this short no radial antenna was estimated by the users of
it to be nearly 100%. It's ability to break pile-up and be the top
signal on the band was supported by a large number of testimonials.

The antenna can be scaled to work on all of today's ham bands.
Undoubtedly the users of this scaled antenna will be satisfied if they
believe in it.

Are antenna 10% metal and 90% mental? This article seems to confirm
that nothing much has changed in 70 years about antenna evaluations.
