[TowerTalk] Stacking C-3 and EF-240S; EF-240S directivity

Good morning.

The issue of coil loading and linear loading is obvious an old subject. When we
decided to utilize linear loading, it was by choice for performance reasons,
mainly efficiency. We are always open to additional information to improve
performance and our testing is on-going. For excellent reading, one should look
into LB's (W4RNL) writing on short elements. It is in CQ's Communications
Quarterly publications and most likely also available on his web site.

Pete's (N4ZR) observation on turning around a 2el 40 having a fine pattern
identifies a common misconception: if an antenna has a good pattern, it must
also have good gain. It might, but it might not. The key is the efficiency.
There are many antennas that are designed for pattern (particularly F/B), but
have loss. In these cases, the pattern was the primary design goal. Perhaps some
readers have used (military) antennas like this. In cases like this, where the
antenna is also used for transmitting, the power level can be adjusted to
compensate for the loss (we USA amateurs we are not so fortunate!).

If anyone has actual data on comparisons of coil loaded dipoles and linear
loaded ones, please let me know. Am always interested in actual data, since the
computer can only go so far and modeling linear loading is extremely difficult.
Using a single dipole is the only way to know for sure, as it minimizes the
variables. Am sure some would like to argue, but substitution (changing) of more
than one item/factor at a time leads to speculation and assumptions.

When there is a superior loading system and it is a reasonable product to
manufacture (and sell) - we will surely do it.

Hope everyone is getting ready for the CQWW CW.....please look for 6Y2A! We will
also be on 6 mtrs before the contest.

Have a great day & 73,
