[TowerTalk] Newbie help, please...

I have a C4 mounted on a 9 foot roof tower on my garage (with a
discone about 8 feet above).

1. I drilled my holes for the roof tower and ran the 8 stainless
steel threaded stock down to the 2x8s mounted across the beams.

2. I tilted the roof tower over and mounted the rotator, mast, thrust
bearing, and discone.

3. With help, walked the tower back to vertical and rebolted it to
the rods.

4. I hired a local sign company to lift the C4 from the ground and
mount it on the mast. This step took 35 minutes from the time they
arrived until they left and cost $135 which I felt was one of my best
investments (safety and time-wise).

The result is a very satisfactory working beam and I seldom even
bother with turning on the amplifier. By the way, I live in valley
(yes, Iowa is not flat like I grew up believing!) about 75 feet below
the average terrain and I only see the difference when the wind
blows and I get half to a third of what everyone else gets.

I use coaxial inverted Ls for my low band antennas looped over
whatever trees are convenient. If you do not have any natural (or
unnatural skyhooks) that are 40 feet or higher, then mount the R-7000
either on the ground or soemwhere else on the roof as far as possible
from the C4 and enjoy!

I presently use a Cushcraft R-7000 vertical, mounted on the gable end of my
garage but want to put up a tower with a rotatable beam. The tower is out
of the question right now so I have an interim alternative that is
XYL-approved and solicit opinions on its viability:

I found a great deal on a Force 12 C-4 10-15-20-40M beam and propose to
mount it on a rooftop tripod on the garage, the beam being about 25 feet
above ground. Due to the swing of the C-4, the Cushcraft would have to come
down so I propose to either ground-mount it, or, mount it above the beam on
the same mast.

My question: should I bother or is the beam simply too low to be efficient,
and, is there any problem rotating the vertical with the beam??

Also, when standing on the peak of the roof, in front of an eight foot
tripod, with a 34 foot vertical in my hand, how the hell do I get it mounted
on the mast??

No laughter, please,

Dick
