Even the salespeople at work tend to "give away" our software upgrades -
much to the dislike of management.  Many man-years of work go into a
good software product (before and after the sale), yet most see only the
disk (~39 cents) and not all that is behind it.  Also, the mass selling
of excellent software from Microsoft (I can hear the boos now!) for low
prices causes the unwashed to wonder why scientific software is so
expensive and lacking of gee-whiz features.  For a hardware analogy,
many hams I have spoken with do not understand why a HF rig costs >US$2K
and a VCR can cost <$200.  Hard to convince them.
