Two sets of braided dacron guys is way cheap compared to a visit to the
emergency room, or worse.... 
I agree that the first three sections above the base (non-pier bases only,
thank you) of 25G (or heavier) can be erected safely without temporary guys...
Going more than one section above that guy point without a temporary guy set
is just plain stupid....
