We had a problem with our A3S on the mast 10' above the 50' tower top at =
our club station. When I opened up the feedline/barrel/balun interface =
(PL259-Barrel-PL259), the balun PL259 was completely trashed inside. I =
couldn't really tell if it was a dissimilar metal (I wasn't looking for =
that aspect) or water infiltration. I replaced the balun (coaxial =
cable) and still have the old one and it's PL259. I'll take a look at =
it again. The barrel was very clean, but I replaced it anyway.=20

I am experiencing a similar failure mode when using barrels in coax =
runs.
   =20
Now, I just make sure to NOT use barrels (outside) in my =
installations, but I am at a loss to understand why these barrels seem =
to cause such a problem.
   =20
My best guess is that the corrosion problem develops as the result =
of a dissimilar metal transaction (cathodic exchange), despite any of =
my attempts to completely wrap or protect the plugs and barrel from the =
elements.
