For smaller (4' x 4' and less) holes, I use a "one man" gasoline powered
post hole digger to break up the dirt.  This is particularly helpful in
clay-gumbo type soils.  

Several holes are drilled around the parameter, and the loose soil is
easily removed by shovel.  This operation is repeated 3 or 4 times until
the desired depth is reached.

However ... these "one man" powered post hole diggers do not work at all
with any significant amount of rocks in the soil.
