The ground screen very definitely helps. Another way to help is to raise the
antenna, at least 10 feet from the bottom to the ground.  But unfortunately this
usually starts to work against the reasons the person had to get that antenna in
the first place, requires guys, etc.

PUT DOWN THE WIRE!  A spoke arrangement with the center directly under the
antenna. You won't regret it.
