>From reading this, I get the impression you aren't going to get enough
lube on the "exposed" cables.  You need to be spraying directly onto the
cable so that it can migrate into the inner parts of the strands.  With
the sponge, you will only be coating the outside.  Other than making a
mess, I doubt that you can put too much on.
