A coil in the base will drain off low level currents but impedes current
with a fast rise time (such as a lightning strike).  Remember, V=L di/dt.
The faster the rise time, the greater the voltage across the coil which
is connected to your feedline.

For lightning protection, shunt feeding a grounded element is the best
solution.
