FWIW,
Some years ago I lived with Gerry, W3GM and his wife
at his contest QTH (I was in the middle of a divorce
at the time). Since I was mostly interested in the
low band DX, Gerry and I installed a 80/160M inverted
Vee on the 100 foot 40 meter tower. This was actually
two inverted vees fed with a single coax. I ran this
into my room where I had some of my equipment (TS-830S
and amplifier). It was too complicated to hook up to
the contest antenna systems (4-square on 80, two
phased verticals on 160). This antennas played very
well on 75/80 being able to work JA and Asians almost
at will. Rag chewing with EU stations was
commonplace. On 160 however, The antenna was not
nearly as "hot". If there was any kind of pileup, I
usually had to wait even running some power (1200W)
and Gerry had a super location (ridge top). At my
present QTH, with similar ground conditions, My 60 FT
linear & top loaded vertical has played much better
over the years. BTW, the vertical arrays at W3GM
played like gangbusters!
None of this really proves anything, just some
practical observations.
73, Stew K3ND
