With about .02wl gap at the open ends, they will look like almost 
like a solid sheet of copper to the system. Even .05 wl gap at the 
open end isn't all that bad, but I'd avoid more than that.

When laid on the ground or buried, just make them as long as you 
can within reason. 100 feet or so is good, and more than 200 feet 
long is a total waste. They don't need top be any specific resonant 
length unless they are elevated, and even then they only need to 
be a specific length if you only use a few radials.
