One of ON4UN's reasons is the high angle radiation to keep the Eu QRM in 
contests away by also having good signal (and horizontal component) in Eu. 
(He told me that.)

He is also taking advantage of his particular situation with limited real 
estate size and his 80m 4 square is suspended from the tower over 160m radial 
field/screen.

>From practical experience team vertical bunch found and they prefer using 
elevated resonant radials over good (salt water) ground, rather than burying 
them in it. 

I think there is a little bit too much of "reasoning" based on simulation 
software going on as compared to some practical experiences and results. The 
truth will eventually come out and will be confirmed and verified (look in 
contest results).
