I disagree 2 element shorty 40 stacks are pretty common with contesters.
See mine at www.arraysolutions.com take the QTH tour.

Also the new CAL-AV 2D-40 set a new performance standard for 2 element
  40m full size stack.

Jay: I'm not a contester so have little contact with them in person. There
aren't any stacked 2 element beams around here and I've not seen any in
print. But my instincts have been right on, I smoked out they are being used
and I like to say--"as usual". I'm still looking for someone with stacked 2
element quads.

I will be doing a lot with stacked 2's in SD. In the 30's I used to hitch
hike around the state to see different antennas. In the 40's I got a motor
bike and traveled out of state to see various antennas. I have stopped to
see various antennas when traveling. In all this I've never seen stacked 2
element beams. After I get moved I'll be on the lecture circuit again and
will have time to inspect the conterster's sites. I hope to build a contest
station of some kind. I would have other operators also. I operate in
contests now just to see how I compare. 2 element beams do a great job in
pile ups.

I will show the patterns of stacked 2 element beams, their mutual
interferance and compare them to 3, 5, 7 and more elements stacked and the
relative cost--when I get time. K7GCO >>
