The resistor would be for current limiting in case the feedline became 
shorted.  Protect the power supply, particularly if one is "borrowing" 
the voltage from a high capacity power supply used elsewhere!  The current 
limiting resistor might require some changes in power supply and/or relay 
coil voltage but worthwhile.
