You guys are pretty tough! This is a creative idea - notwithstanding many of 
the minor drawbacks that you have identified. I think the primary advantage of 
this arangement, however, is the ability to use standard Rohn tower hardware to 
do just about everything. Base plate, rotor plate, top tube . . . it's easy, it 
provides a pretty stable solution without guying, etc. It's also a bit more 
aesthetially pleasing than putting more hardware on the roof. To reduce the 
problem of the mast banging against the "top tube", a carefully positioned 
thrust bearing could be inserted inside the top of the tower section.
