Nothing to add to the pros and cons. All nicely said by other...
especially the "they were pulled out of service for a reason" comment.
You have to be willing to live with that reason.
In my case, if the poles fall, they won't hurt a thing except my ego.
The will support a couple of horizontal loops at 50+' when they are
completed later this year.
My main reason for posting is to counter some of the high expense
comments. Around here, the REA will plant a pole for $40 flat rate,
unless you get taller than they are comfortable with. The post from LA
with all of the crews and bosses drew a chuckle. Modern trucks handle
the entire job from start to finish, and one man can do it, but two is
easier. It drills the hole, plants the pole, tamps the dirt as it goes
back in, and all under an hour.
The person who found 130' poles in Florida for whatever price that was,
should buy up all he can. That was either a typo, or an unbelievably
good deal. New poles are terribly expensive. Used ones can be free
(with the earlier mentioned caveats).
As for guying... I'm considering a back stay on mine. The loops will
pull them toward the middle of the square, and I'd feel better having a
guy pulling away from the center on each pole.
