I have the "Whole "house" unit from Poly, they make a 100amp and a 200amp
type. It goes between the mains coming in and your home's breaker box. I
believe it steps down transients and nearby "hits" to a much lower level.
But you still need the APC or Poly devices on the equipment for the last of
the spike. I could be wrong, but as it was explained to me the Poly "whole
house" box steps down the hit to level that is managable by the consumer
boxes at each piece of equipment. This is how is was explained to me. I also
have the Poly box for the cable tv line coming in, and the polybox for the
telephone. I share your frustration, living out in the country as I do, with
power damage. I still unplug everything when the big ones/loud ones come
through.

Subject: [TowerTalk] "whole house" surge protection
I talked to Polyphaser this morning re surge protection at the main
entrance panel. They suggested a shunt unit: IS-PM240-SP.
Anyone tried this unit? Any suggestions or other units you might have used?
Rage mode on
I'm tired of the damage. I have my shack protected and totally unplug
anyway when I leave here. I have APC devices on all the satellite, stereo,
TVs and PCs. I still take hits... last week it was the garage door opener.
Rage mode off
Thanks,
