Regarding the above comment about protection cost versus equipment value . . .

Last summer I suffered a lightning strike on an ISDN line that serves my home 
office. The strike took out everything connected to the line, including the 
telco equipment down the street [an ISDN SLIC], my ISDN NT1, ISDN router, 
10baseT hub, and three computers. All computers suffered damage that went way 
beyond the 10baseT interface. Insurance coverage was sufficient to permit 
replacement of everything. However, I never recovered the data on the disk 
drives. And, I had no recent backups.

What is the best investment to protect yourself against catastrophic damage to 
computers resulting from a lightning strike? Full data backups! Equipment only 
costs money. How do you reconstruct critical data files representing years of 
work?
