My experience has shown that steel wool will imbed itself in any material
that is softer than itself. This includes aluminum and furniture finishes.
BTW, off topic, we're even told on finish cans to use steel wool by the
manufacturer! I have even had steel wool particles so imbedded in aluminum
elements that the steel wool rusted and was visble! So, agreeing with
everyone else, use scotch brite.
