The problem with this and similar water methods is that the resulting
hole is just enough larger in diameter than the rod, that there is poor
surface contact between the rod and the surrounding soil.  You want as
much of the surface area of the rod in solid contact with the soil as
you can.  If you can pull the rod out by hand, there is, by definition,
little surface pressure on it from the surrounding soil.
