I really appreciate all the empirical and anecdotal data and wisdom
being received via this discussion of quad and yagi(-uda) antennas. We
are blessed by learned contributors who generously share their
knowledge.
Because they fit my present wants, needs, situation and budget, I have
alumimum beams perched atop the tower.
But I refuse to let go of fond boyhood memories from the 1950s when I
rode my bicycle to the hardware store, used my lawn-mowing earnings to
buy eight bamboo fishing poles and a handful of u-bolts, and created my
first directional antenna -- a two-element 10/15-meter quad -- that I
fastened to 30 feet of scrounged water pipe and lashed to one my mom's
sturdy backyard clothesline standards. Rotation was by the Armstrong
method, radiation was marginal at best. But I was proud to have built
it, and every QSO wrung from it (via a Heathkit DX-35 and Hallicrafters
SX-99) seemed just a bit sweeter.
OK, back to the modeling software....
