    Good point. Coating the rod with roofing tar adds an extra layer of 
protection. Sort of the old belt-and-suspenders approach. It wouldn't hurt.

    It's not the rust that will topple the tower - you still need a windstorm 
to come through and over-stress everything. In that case, yes - your 
homeowner's insurance covers that kind of damage. Your insurance company will 
consider the tower either another structure or personal property; either way 
it's covered.
